Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens
The Zoological Society of Cincinnati was founded in 1873 and officially opened its doors in 1875, making the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden the second oldest Zoo in the United States.
Rated by peer zoological parks as one of the best zoos in the nation, the Cincinnati Zoo continues to set the standard for conservation, education and preservation of wild animals and wild spaces. More than 1.5 million people visit the Zoo annually. The Zoo features more than 500 animal and 3,000 plant species, making it one of the largest Zoo collections in the country.
We were invited to spend the day seeing all we could and learning even more. I have to admit it was 96 degrees when we went and I know we missed a lot. I plan on returning on a cooler day to see everything I missed.
Their signs they have posted throughout the park, have a lot of information. It helps you to understand the animals you are seeing. It tells you how long they can live, where they are naturally located, and how much they can weigh.
The elephants were taking food over to their pond to eat and drink. They are huge! But in their area they look like gentle giants.
They have a lot of workers that are in different areas to teach you more if you want to learn. She is holding an elephant tooth. They get up to 6 sets in their life. Now those are huge! I would hate to have that dentist bill!
The gentlemen on the left is telling them how to wash this elephant.
Here is a big one with the tusks.
This zoo really teaches you a lot in a small amount of time. I highly recommend visiting and taking the kids or grandkids.
They even teach you a few tricks on going green.
You can learn a lot about plants and see some beautiful plants and flowers.
Yes he is sitting right there by the sign.
This is one area I was glad to see them behind the glass.
This little guy did not want company. They recommend to visit the zoo in the morning when the animals are more active.
Some of the animals are just beautiful.
When we were taking pictures we thought there was only 1 but there are 2 in this picture. Can you see both of them?
Since this has gotten a lot of attention lately I had to go see this part.
These guys were hot and relaxing. The second picture shows the tail and back of the one in the back of the cave, in the first picture. They have long tails.
This guy is a lot bigger in person. I would not want to run into him out in nature!
This guy looked like someone got involved with a zebra that was not a zebra.
Take a break and let the kids play. You can relax, and since most kids have lots of energy it will help them sleep even better.
Some of the pictures the kids took and they turned out blurry but I wanted to show you what a wonderful variety of animals you can see and learn about at the Cincinnati Zoo.
These little guys were napping in the playroom. There was a young man teaching us at this display and he told us the one with the vest on, has a feeding tube and the vest protects it.
This display was so funny. We first notice the one because he was being mouthy, not sure why. Then we started looking and here came a few more.
Then 6, and 7. I am sure there were more but they all decided to come out to see us together.
On the other side of this swimming pond was some different penguins.
This told us what we were looking at.
Now that is one big sea lion. We went to Alaska years ago and when my husband was walking around on the docks a sea lion jumped up on the dock and just sat there. Scared him awake!
You can watch them in their pool, when they get in.
The kids went into this little house where they have a lot on display so everyone learns as much as possible. Madison has dyslexia so when I can get her to read I do, she did not mind reading all the signs.
Another worker had this little one out on a bench for us to learn more about.
This little guy was a little shabby looking. The worker told us about him. He even bit the workers finger, no blood just trying to chomp down.
Madison informed Desiree one day when Desiree wanted to watch a you tube video on science “You cannot do science on the weekend, it’s just not right!” Well of course I laughed. I hate to tell her that she learned on vacation and loved it!
We learned so much and truly enjoyed out trip to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Thank you so much for letting us come and enjoy a wonderful day.
