Did you know that more than 50% of pets in America are overweight? Overweight pets can lead to having health issues, so it’s important to address a weight issue early before it becomes a more serious problem. Even a little bit of extra weight can be major for pets, five extra pounds on a small dog is over 30 extra pounds on a human! Pet Weight Loss is so important to keep them happy and healthy. The next step may need to be dog food for weight loss to get them back to their perfect weight! Dog weight loss is something a lot of dogs need.
I went to PetMD to learn more. If your pet is taking in more calories than he/she burns, this is causing him/her to be overweight. It is recommended to have your overweight pet examined for health issues. We love to see our pets eat a meal eagerly but your pet will eat when it wants instead of when you want.
A common myth that spaying/neutering make pets obese. This is false! They will not be as active so you will need to adjust how much food they are eating.
PetMD has listed 4 types of dogs that overeat with the help of Mom/Dad: (found HERE)
Type I: THE NIBBLER: “But doctor, she hardly eats a thing.”
This dog probably has food out all day and nibbles a little at a time. When dinner time comes it will take the choicest morsels, leave the rest, and still appear not to have eaten very much. Over a 24-hour period “THE NIBBLER’S” total calorie intake is excessive and it gains weight.
Type II: THE BEGGAR: “But doctor, this rascal won’t keep quiet unless she gets her treats.”
The pet discovered more noise and fussing more likely it is rewarded The owner “gives in” to keep the pet quiet and the pet sees the food as a reward.
Type III: THE GOOD DOG: “But doctor, s/he’s such a good dog we don’t want her to go hungry.”
This dog became overweight because the owner’s signal of affection for their pet has focused on feeding. The owners’ method of showing affection should be directed more toward physical activity than feeding.
Type IV: THE GOURMET DOG: “But doctor, s/he just refuses to eat dog food.” In this case the dog has trained the owners to feed him/her such things as chicken, liver, ice cream, cookies, etc.
This dog has been given a choice of what to eat and has chosen certain people food. The Gourmet Dog usually overeats because s/he isn’t getting a proper balance of nutrition, plus everything tastes so good there is a reward factor in eating. The solution is … you choose, not your pet.
I don’t know about you but I am guilty of more than one of the above! My oldest dog, Velvet, is 15 years old this year. We have had her since she was 5 weeks old, so I have seen her in all stages of her life. I have seen her getting pudgy and on her it is really noticeable, especially after a hair cut. Well she is a unique dog because when I noticed she was getting heavy within a week or so I noticed she was not eating as much. Pretty soon she was back down to her slim self. She could feel the extra weight and took care of it.
If we all could watch our dogs closely and keep them at their perfect weight or if they start to get overweight correct their feeding and get them outside to get more exercise to stop and reverse it before it becomes a problem, we could help our pets live happier healthier lives.
On the other hand we had another dog we got the month before Velvet, his name was Chin. He would eat anything put where he could reach it. He was really active but not enough to burn that much. By the time he was 6 he had several health issues and eventually was put to sleep because he ended up being really sick. He was definitely overweight!
